The Brainstem - Dorsal View

SC, IC : Superior and inferior colliculi forming the tectum of the midbrain. Note the attachment of the rochlear nerve (IV) just below the inferior colliculus. In the upper corners the medial and lateral geniculate bodies (nuclei) are visible.

S,M and I : Cerebellar peduncles. Note the superior peduncles directed towards the midbrain. The middle peduncles lead to the pons. It is difficult to appreciate the continuity between the inferior peduncles and the medulla.

C and G  : Cuneate and gracile tubercles.

Food for thought :

What is the function of the superior colliculi? That of inferior colliculi?

Which descending tract begins in the tectum?

What is the origin and destination of the majority of fibres in the superior cerebellar peduncles? What are the fibres in the middle cerebellar peduncles? How do these figure in the circuits for motor control by the cerebellum?

What is the function of the nuclei in the cuneate and gracile tubercles? What are internal acuate fibres? Can outline the pathway to which these nuclei belong?
