In the area
marked 'A', note that the lateral ventricles almost meet in the midline, with
the septum pellucidum under the foot of the A. This, then is the anterior side
of the section.
The little cavity at the tip of the septum is not the third ventricle! It is called cavum septi pellucidi.
See the folia of the vermis of the cerebellum near 'B'. That indicates the posterior side.
On the anterior side CC is the corpus callosum - this part is anterior to the lateral ventricle, it is the genu. CH is the head of the caudate nucleus, bulging into the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. P : putamen, note the connection between the caudate and the putamen interrupted by the anterior limb of the internal capsule (ICA). ICG : Genu of the internal capsule. ICP : Posterior limb of the internal capsule, between the lentiform nucleus and the thalamus. Note the external capsule, claustrum, extreme capsule and the insula, in that order, lateral to the lentiform nucleus. Just posterior to 'A', the columns of fornix are seen dipping down towards the mamillary bodies (not seen in this slice).
OR : Optic radiation, emerging from the lateral geniculate nucleus, reaching out to the cortex around the calcarine sulcus. This cortex (striate area) shows the stria of Gennari ("Str").
LV : Lateral ventricle, in the region of the junction between the body, posterior horn and the inferior horn.
"Pi" is the pineal body. The superior colliculi are seen peeping on either side of the pineal. This is a rather thick slice, the colliculi are a little inferior. The midbrain continues from the thalamic region, backwards and inferiorly.
