Week 9
Lymphoid Tissues - 2
You may have to make allowance for the fact that some lymphoid tissue sections may not be stained well!
Spleen

This low magnification view of the spleen shows a fairly large part of the organ. What strikes us in contrast with the lymph node is that there is no cortex or medulla. The capsule is on the surface (C). Extensions of the capsule as incomplete partitions are seen as trabeculae (T). A large vein (V) is seen in a trabecula. White pulp (stained blue!) is seen in the circles. Higher magnification will reveal the arteriole in each one. The rest of the tissue is red pulp. |

This picture is not very well stained, but we can recognise the lymphoid nodules (splenic corpuscles/white pulp!) with germinal centres. Careful examination under the microscope will reveal the arterioles. |
